Identify a Still or Distillation System
Use manufacturer plates, materials, vessel geometry, fittings, condenser, heat source and documentation to identify equipment.
Federal law prohibits producing distilled spirits at home. Beverage production requires prior TTB qualification of a Distilled Spirits Plant, plus applicable state and local approvals. Alcohol vapor, heat and pressure create severe fire and explosion hazards.
Photograph the complete system
Capture vessel, head, column, condenser, supports, controls, heating, relief, valves, labels and every loose component.
Record dimensions
Measure vessel capacity, column diameter, ferrules, tube sizes, overall height, electrical ratings and shipping footprint.
Separate maker and component brands
A system may combine a boiler from one maker, a column from another and third-party controls. Record each identity separately.
Document prior use
Ask what was processed, where the equipment operated, whether permits existed and why it was removed.
Do not infer legality from design
A water, essential-oil or beverage-capable still may share components. Intended use, setup and premises determine the compliance question.
